MATCH PREVIEW: Pre-Season Friendly sees First Team in action away to Lincoln City.

Pre-season friendlies begin as Huddersfield travel to Lincoln

  • Town kick off their pre-season away at Lincoln City on Sunday 3rd July, 2pm kick-off.
  • With both teams having successful 21/22 seasons the game should be full of quality.
  • The first of six pre-season friendlies for Huddersfield Town Women.

Huddersfield Town Women travel to Lincoln on Sunday 3rd July for their first pre-season game of the campaign.

The 21/22 season was a successful year for The Terriers, they finished sixth in the FAWNL Premier Division North and reached two cup finals, winning the Sheffield FA County Cup in a 5-0 victory against Barnsley Women. This upcoming season the talented squad and coaches will be looking to build on this, aiming to push further up the league table and to win more silverware in the cup competitions.

Lincoln City Women also had a successful 21/22 season finishing third in the Division One Midlands League, finishing just three points behind champions Boldmere St Michaels. Lincoln also completed the season as County Cup Champions after an emphatic 8-0 win in the final against Sleaford.

Both sides will be looking to start of their pre-season campaigns on a positive, The Terriers will be eager to put in a good performance and a result to match it. This is the first of six pre-season friendlies for Town, it will give a good opportunity for manager Glen Preston and the coaching staff to try out new ideas, tactics, and players ahead of the 22/23 season.

There should be no shortage of goals in this match with Laura Elford and Brittany Sanderson both surpassing 20 goals in the 21/22 season, and the side amounting a total of 109 goals across the whole campaign.

Lincoln City women were also not short of goals last season scoring a total of 68, the fifth highest in the Division One Midlands League.

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Town’s Ria Montgomery is certainly a player to watch, making 36 appearances last season which was the most out of any player in the squad and scoring ten goals from midfield. This shows how important she is to the side, a player who is vital to the team’s success.

Another key player for The Terriers last season and certainly one to watch this year is striker Laura Elford. Elford finished last season on a total of 23 goals, Towns top goal scorer of the season. Elford had a very impressive 21/22 campaign and she will be looking to carry this form into pre-season and the upcoming season.

For Lincoln Toni Mchamilton is certainly an impressive player. Mchamilton finished second top goal scorer in the FAWNL Division One Midlands League last year, scoring 14 goals. The striker will be the main threat for City and is certainly one to keep an eye on.

After Town face Lincoln City, they will play Chorley Women away in their second pre-season game on Sunday 10th July, then followed by four more pre-season friendlies. Before the season officially starts on Sunday 21st August. The Terriers will be eager for a successful pre-season campaign to carry momentum into the start of the 22/23 season.

MATCH REPORT: HUDDERSFIELD END SEASON IN DEFEAT TO HULL

Huddersfield Town Women welcomed an already relegated Hull City to the Stafflex Arena on Sunday 8th May but ended the season in defeat to finish sixth place.

Town Women dominated the early exchanges of the game and there were chances for both Laura Elford and Kate Mallin but after 16 minutes a long-range strike from Helen Lynskey flew over Laura Carter in goal to give the visitors the lead.

Hull would soon double their advantage as on the half an hour mark a corner was swung in and it dropped fortuitously to Hull’s Lynskey who rifled it in to make it two. Town Women responded quickly through, top scorer, Elford who came through 1 on 1 following an excellent lobbed ball by captain Vicky Abbott, the forward shooting with power on the edge of the box to beat the standard keeper.

The second half was dominated largely by Town Women again with good spells of attack coming from the left-hand side, but nothing transpired into a goal.

Then, on 55 minutes, an emotional farewell for Laura Carter as she was given a guard of honour by both set of players as she left the pitch for her final Town Women Game following 20 years with the club.

The home side continued to dominate, and Mallin came extremely close again as her free kick forced a brilliant save from the Hull keeper. The game proceeded to be well-managed by Hull and despite a strong challenge from Town Women during the final few moments they were unable to find an equaliser. The game finished as it was a at half time: 1-2 to the visitors.

The full-time whistle not only ended the 2021/22 season. It also called time on Vicky Abbott’s footballing career as Town Women’s long-standing centre-back will be hanging up her boots alongside Carter’s goalkeeping gloves and Katie Stanley’s captains’ armband.

MATCH REPORT: Huddersfield Town 2-1 Stockport County

Huddersfield Town Development Team take another step closer to finishing the season unbeaten, after a difficult test against Stockport.

After an emphatic 7-1 win against Bradford on Tuesday, it was a much tighter affair on Sunday at the Stafflex Arena. Town weren’t at their best but still picked up all three points.

The opening stages of the game were competitive with both teams looking to take control of the game. However, it was Town who got the first goal ten minutes in. Cassidy Clift was played through on goal; she took the ball round the goalkeeper and finished confidently into an open net.

The first half continued with fast paced and high-quality play from both sides, with both teams creating good opportunities. Stockport looked to get the score level and the Terriers looking for their second goal.

On the 20th minute it was Town who got the goal to double their lead. Sian Gibrill-Keating  was played through on goal, she turned brilliantly and hit a powerful shot into the bottom corner, giving the keeper no chance. Putting Town 2-0 in front at half-time.

In the second-half Stockport came out on the front foot, eager to get a goal back and on the 55th minute they did. The ball was played out wide, then passed into box, it was then knocked to the side of the keeper and it was tapped into an open net. It was finished well after a nice move from Stockport, who made it 2-1 and were back in the game.

Stockport continued with the pressure looking to equalise, but they couldn’t break down Town’s strong defence. Town had a chance a few minutes from full-time to make it 3-1, but Laura’s shot hit the crossbar. The game finished 2-1, although The Terriers weren’t at their best, they still managed to pick up all three points.

At full-time manager Alan Eastwood and captain Kayley Hird gave their thoughts.

Alan Eastwood said: “They came at us in the second half, they’re a very physical side, but I think from us it was a very typical end of season performance. They’ve given everything today and I can’t really ask for much more”.

Kayley Hird gave her thoughts on the excellent defensive record from Town this season: “It’s a massive achievement every game when we get a clean sheet, I just think we’ve been solid at the back, going back to Carter we’ve got that experience as well, she keeps us settled”.

Town’s final game is against Brighouse, the date of the game is still to be decided. The Terriers just need two more goals to reach an impressive 100 league goals and if they win or draw, they will end the season unbeaten.

MATCH PREVIEW: Huddersfield Town Women Devs v Stockport County Reserves

Huddersfield Town Women Devs play Stockport County Reserves in their penultimate home game of the season.

Town Devs are unbeaten in the FA Women’s National League Reserves Northern Division. After their match against Chorley Women, they were crowned Champions with three games remaining.

Having won 15 of their 17 matches and knowing they are the League Champions, Town Devs go into their remaining fixtures on a high. The Terriers host Stockport County Reserves in their penultimate home game, while still waiting for confirmation on when the rescheduled home tie against Brighouse will be.

Last time out was at the Stockport Sports Village. Town Women Devs scored within the first 10 minutes as Falone Sumaili found the back of the Hatters net. Sumaili nearly doubled her tally on the half hour mark, but the Hatters defender forced the shot wide.

The game finished after Sumaili scored her hat-trick and Sian Gibrill-Keating had a brace. The clubs met a week later, at the Stafflex Arena this time, in the determining round of the League Cup. Town were victorious in this game as well.

Players to watch

Lois Scholefield has had a great last couple of games, and is definitely someone to keep an eye on. However, the whole team, who are playing their last scheduled home game of the season are our ones to watch, after working incredibly hard the whole season.

Manager Alan Eastwood said:

“It’s been an incredible season and our last goal as a team is to try and remain unbeaten. 15 league wins on the bounce and becoming league champions takes a lot of hard work and dedication. The squad have given us everything, but we have to stay focused and play the same way we have for 75% of the season, if we want to achieve our next goal. Hopefully the players are up for it and will end the season on a high.”

On Laura Carter:

“She has been an incredible servant to the club and for the devs this year she has lead by example, been supportive of this young team and played a huge part in us winning the title. I’d like to thank her for everything she has done for the club, she will be sadly missed. I’m sure the girls will give her the send off she deserves.”

Huddersfield Town Devs face Stockport County Reserves at the Stafflex Arena. Kick off is at 14:00 on Sunday, and fans are more than welcome to come down and cheer the team on. MATCH REPORT: Bradford City 1-7 Huddersfield Town Development Team

Huddersfield Town Women’s Development Team keep up the unbeaten record as they beat Bradford City 7-1 in another brilliant result.

The Terriers started the game fast and they wasted no time getting in front, just 10 minutes into the game the deadlock was broken with a goal from Lois Mattock. Falone Sumaili beat the offside trap and then the city ‘keeper, before crossing to Mattock who tapped the ball into an open net to make it 1-0.

On the 30th minute, Sumaili got her second assist of the evening as she passed the ball to Macy Ellis whose powerful shot hit the bar and went in. An unstoppable strike and a brilliant start for Town. 

Then just five minutes later after already getting two assists, Sumaili was on the scoresheet as well. Great play from Leoni Price ran into space and her shot was magnificently saved, but the rebound fell to Sumaili who scored to make it 3-0.

Town then got another goal this time it came from Sian Gibrill-Keating. After a pass from Mattock, Gibrill-Keating’s shot was fired into the back off the net. After a brilliant 45 minutes from Town, they went into the break 4-0 up, continuing their brilliant league form.

Town started the second half as they ended the first and in the 48th minute Macy Ellis got her second of the match. The ball was crossed into the box and Ellis was first to react to make it 5-0 to the Terriers.

In the 60th minute Town made it 6-0 with a goal from substitute Laura. After a great cross from Mattock, Laura got her first goal of the match and Town’s sixth. City managed to get a goal back in the 64th minute.

To crown off a good performance Macy Ellis got her hat-trick with her final touch of the game. Her shot flew through the city goalkeepers’ legs and into the back of the net. 

Minutes later the full-time whistle went. It was another goal-filled result from Town who haven’t let their standards drop all season and stay unbeaten in the league.

At full-time manager Alan Eastwood wasn’t fully impressed with the performance but happy with the seven goals: “If were not playing well and we’ve scored seven goals that’s a massive positive.

“We want to get to the end of the season unbeaten now and we’ve gone through the motions today, but we really need to pick this up for the last game of the season now.”

Town are now just one game away from finishing the season unbeaten which would be an unbelievable achievement and would cap off a fantastic season. 

Their final game of the season is against Stockport County at the Stafflex Arena on Sunday. Supporters are welcome to come and see the final game of the season and give the girls a great send off.

MATCH PREVIEW: Huddersfield Town Women v Hull City

Huddersfield Town Women end their season with a home game

Huddersfield Town Women host Hull City, in the final game of the season. Town Women enter the game as County Cup Champions, and sit sixth in the league. The Women Terriers still have a change to finish in the four with victory and a couple of other results going their way.

Hull City LFC are bottom of the FAWNL Premier Division North and have been relegated from the division. Town Women end the season with silverware, as the Women Terriers lifted the Sheffield & Hallamshire FA County Cup on last Sunday.

Town Women can edge back up the table with a win against bottom of the league Hull City LFC. City have lost their last five league outings, , in fact, City have only won one match all season. Hull City have been relegated from the divison so have nothing to loose going into this game.

Town Women will be looking to end their season on a high, after winning the Cup last weekend, Huddersfield Town Women will not want to end on a defeat.

Hull City conceded 10 goals in their last three games, one of which was the reverse fixture against Town Women. City scored a goal against Derby County, but otherwise have struggled to find the back of the net.

Hull will be out to try and win. Although already relegated, a win against a current top six side will at least be a boost to confidence. City have struggled this season and aim to go out with some pride, and will want to beat the team that relegated them.

LAST TIME OUT

Town Women travelled to Haworth in April to play the postponed match. Early chances fell to both sides, but no one could find the net. In the first 20 mins the hosts had the opportunity to take the lead, however our keeper made a fine save from their corner. Town Women took the lead when Beth Ibbotson headed in from a Brittany Sanderson cross.

On the stroker of half time, the Women Terriers doubled their lead. Katie Stanley crossed to Mia Parry who netted. After the break the hosts had another free kick, and a great chance to get back in the game. Fortunately, Stanley cleared and it came to nothing.

City pushed for a way back into the game, but lacked quality in the final third. However, Town Women had no such issues, they kept the pressure on and Sanderson got on the end of Kate Mallins cross to score the third.

The final ten minutes just added to City misery as Stanley made it four, then Sanderson rounded off the game to make it five. All three points went back to West Yorkshire, and Hull City were relegated.

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Vicky Abbott will be playing her last game for Huddersfield Town Women against Hull City. The defender is set to hang up her boots at the end of the season. Abbott has been with the Women Terriers for 10 years. Her last game for Town Women will be full of emotions, but Abbott will go out on a high.

For Hull City LFC Rachael Ackroyd will be one to watch. The City striker has netted a few times this season, so will be the main threat once again for the Town Women.

Glen said:

We played Hull the other week, and I thought until the late stages it was reasonably close game. They had some key players missing, and had the better of the opening exchanges. We know score lines are misleading and change expectations, but Hull will be going all out to end on a high. They will be a tough test for us, Aidy is a top coach.

On lifting silverware

It’s great to have reached two cup finals (again) and to finally win one. From a personal point of view, i’d lost my last three finals with Town, so, for my sanity I needed the win last Sunday. It was a great performance from the players, they were top drawer.

On league position

As for final league position, I don’t think it matters too much now. On form we hve been the third best team in the second half of the season. We’ve only dropped points in games where we’ve suffered heavy injuries to key attacking players. Injuries mixed with a very heavy fixture pile up has meant we havent’t been able to rest plyers at all, so I think it’s been tough for us mentally and physically, yet we have put in top performances.

The final game

Today will be more about trying to sign off the season with a win, but maybe also giving 1-2 players from the development team an opportunity. As well as saying goodbye to a few club legends who will be sorely missed (there may be the odd tear after the game.)

MATCH PREVIEW: Bradford City Reserves v Huddersfield Town Women Devs

Huddersfield Town Women Devs travel to local rivals Bradford City in what will be their final away game of the campaign.

Town’s Devs are unbeaten in the FA Women’s National League Reserves Northern Division. After their match against Chorley Women, they were crowned Champions with three games remaining.

Having won 15 of their 17 matches and knowing they are the League Champions, Town Devs go into their remaining fixtures on a high. They travel the short distance to play Bradford City reserves. City are ninth in the table, having won four of the 19 matches they played.  

Last time out was at the Stafflex arena. Town Women Devs started the game well, and within the first 15 minutes had the lead, through who else, but Sian Gibrill-Keating. The Terriers leading goal scorer found the back of the net to give them the lead.

Molly Ellis doubled Town Women’s lead before set piece specialist Tara Duce stepped up, and well, she just never misses from a set piece.

Two minutes into the second half, and City finally found the back of the Town net, they were looking to mount a comeback however goals from Kayley Hird and Alice Linsell secured the three points.

Although now crowned champions, the Terriers will not be taking the game for granted. Aiming to finish the season unbeaten, they will still be taking each game as it comes, and each one as seriously as the last.

Players to watch

Macy Ellis scored a brace against Chorley, and four goals in April. Ellis will be looking to end the season on a high with more goals, and with the pressure off and her shooting boots on, she can score for fun.

Asked about remaining unbeaten to the end of the season Manager Alan Eastwood said

“We do exactly the same, we keep the legs fresh, keep rotating the squad. We make sure that everyone that has been involved, is involved in the last three games as well. It’s more about enjoying this moment right now but staying professional, as the next step is to remain unbeaten.

On being league champions:

“It’s absolutely amazing, the girls have thorougly deserved that. All season they have been absolutely phenominal, done everything we have asked them to do, I think that is six or seven clean sheets on the bounce, scoring good goals as well from all over the pitch. To go against 2nd in the league and win 5-0 at home is fantastic.”

Huddersfield Town Devs travel to Bradford City Reserves and play at Rawdon Meadows. Kick off is at 18:45 on Tuesday, and fans are more than welcome to come down and cheer the team on. MATCH REPORT: Huddersfield Town Devs 5-0 Chorley Reserves

Huddersfield Town Women’s Development Team are crowned Division North Champions after an impressive 5-0 victory over Chorley.

After beating Leeds United 3-0 in midweek Town put themselves within touching distance of becoming champions and today, they mathematically confirmed it.

The opening 10 minutes of the game was an even encounter with both teams having a corner each, looking for that vital opening goal. 

However, it was Town who took the lead on the 15-minute mark with a tidy finish from Sian Gibrill-Keating. Gibrill-Keating won the 1v1 with the goalkeeper, then her powerful shot hit the bar and went in, giving the Terriers an early lead.

The second goal from Town came just five minutes later. Set-piece expert Tara Duce took a corner that flew straight into the back of the net. Catching the Chorley defenders and ‘keeper by surprise and putting Town one step closer to being crowned champions.

Town dominated the reminder of the first half continuing to create chances, with a big opportunity falling to Cassidy Clift just before half time. After great build up play by Town the chance fell to Clift, but her shot was hit just wide. This concluded the first half, with the Terries just 45 minutes away from winning the league.

The second half started with two early chances from Chorley who were eager to get themselves back in the game. However, some great blocks and tackles from Town denied Chorley of the goal. 

Just moments after some good chances for the visitors, Town took advantage of these missed opportunities and made it three. This time with a goal from Lois Scholefield, another great corner from Town resulted in Scholefield reacting the quickest to get on the end of it and making it 3-0 to the Terriers.

In the 68th minute, Macy Ellis added a fourth for Town. She was played through on goal following a great ball from Molly Ellis, she took the ball round the keeper and tapped it into an open net all but sealing the victory for Town. 

Tempers began to flare and in the 73rd minute the Chorley manager was sent off and then their captain was sent to the sinbin for 10 minutes. 

The fifth and final goal of the afternoon came 10 minutes from time with Macy Ellis grabbing her second of the afternoon. The full-time whistle went which saw celebrations after the Terriers were crowned champions.

At full-time manager Alan Eastwood was full of praise for the players: “The girls have thoroughly deserved that today, not just today but all season, they’ve been absolutely phenomenal.

“They’ve trained really hard; they’ve gelled together so well as a team and their efforts on and off the pitch have been phenomenal, I can’t ask anymore from them.

“The next step is to remain unbeaten.”

After a long hard season Town have performed incredibly well and accomplished what they have been aiming to achieve all season. 

They are deservedly champions of the Division North and now aim to finish the season unbeaten which would be an incredible achievement. Town’s next fixture is on Tuesday against Bradford City.

MATCH REPORT: Huddersfield win County Cup Final against Barnsley Women

Huddersfield Town Women have been crowned the Sheffield & Hallamshire FA County Cup champions following a convincing 5-0 win against Barnsley Women at Doncaster Rovers’ Eco-Power Stadium.

A second-half Laura Elford hat-trick and goals from Serena Fletcher and Britt Sanderson secured Town Women’s third County Cup title in six years.

Both teams started the match brightly exchanging quick attacks as either side looked to grab an early advantage. After 14 minutes it was advantage to the Terriers following a well-worked move by Yasmin Mason before finding Fletcher poaching on the edge of the box – her strike finding the back of the net.

HTAFC Women made it two just ten minutes later following a smart counterattack that beat the offside trap. Fletcher setting up Sanderson who shot on the turn to double Town Women’s lead. The first half concluded with the Terriers two goals ahead.

The second half saw Huddersfield’s leading goal scorer take centre stage with Elford scoring her first, Town Women’s third, in the 58th minute. Two quick goals within the final ten minutes completed Elford’s hattrick.

In her penultimate game for Town Women after a decade at the club, Vicky Abbott thought she scored in the final moments of the game when her rebounded header was ruled offside, nevertheless the celebrations started moments later following the referee’s full-time whistle.

First Team Manager, Glen Preston expressed his happiness:

“I am delighted for the club, players and staff that we could give them some silverware to celebrate, because I think everyone deserves it.

“The players versus Southampton gave it everything a week ago to try and make that a possibility and we came up short on the day, and so to bounce back in the manner we did today was a credit to all involved. We played some great football, scored some quality goals and so for me it’s a fitting way to round the season off.”

There was also silverware for Huddersfield Town Women’s development team as they secured their Reserve league title following a 5-0 win against league-title rivals Chorley Reserves. This completed a double-silverware weekend for HTAFC Women who conclude their season on Sunday 8th May as they welcome already relegated Hull City Ladies to the Stafflex Arena.

MATCH PREVIEW: HUDDERSFIELD TOWN DEVS VS CHORLEY WOMEN

Huddersfield Town Women Devs face an important top of the table clash against title rivals Chorley Women.

Town’s Devs are unbeaten in the FA Women’s National League Reserves Northern Division. Having won 14 of their 16 matches and are riding high in the table. Their opponents this weekend are Chorley Women. The Lancastrian side have played three more games than Town, and until the Terriers defeated Leeds United were top of the league. 

If the Terriers beat or draw against Chorley, the title will be heading to West Yorkshire and Huddersfield Town.

The teams have already met twice this season. Once in the reverse fixture at Chorley, and the other was in the quarter final of the League Cup.

The away fixture saw both sides share the points as they split four goals between them. However, last time out in the League Cup was a more thrilling match. Town Devs took the lead in the first quarter of the first half when Sian Gibrill-Keating netted from a super cross from Lois Mattock. 

Chorley kept pressing for the equaliser, and levelled the score on the half hour mark. The second half proved vital, and both sides were looking to score to avoid extra time and penalties.

Fresh legs were brought on by both sides as Town Devs and Chorley Women looked for the killer blow, and it was Chorley that struck what they thought was the winning goal to move through in the Cup. However, Town Women Devs were awarded a free kick on the edge of the area in the dying minutes of the game. Tara Duce stepped up and the ball flew into the back of the net to level up the match.

With everything on the line, and Huddersfield Town Women Devs now level, stoppage time arrived. Less than a minute after the restart Alice Linsell scored a screamer of a goal from a Town free kick on the half way line. The free kick was cleared by a defender, but only as far as Linsell, who didn’t hesitate and sent Town Women Devs through to the semi final of the cup.

Players to watch

Midfielder Tara Duce works her socks off for the team, and this weekend will be no different. Duce loves set pieces, and will be ready to step up should the Terriers be awarded any in this top of the table clash.

Top goal scorer Sian Gibrill-Keating has to be mentioned again, her record speaks for itself this season. Scoring in practically every game she has played the striker will certainly want to end the season on a high with more goals.

If Chorley beat Town Devs on Sunday, goal difference still comes into the equation. The Devs have the better goal difference, so unless Chorley put over 30 goals into the back of the Town net, it’s unlikely to change the league positions.
