Huddersfield Town Women Under 14s Proud to Announce Candlelighters Charity Support

Huddersfield Town Women Under 14s are delighted to announce that they will be supporting Candlelighters as their chosen charity for the 2021/22 season.

Candlelighters are a local charity who support families facing children’s cancer in Yorkshire, and the under 14s are planning several fundraisers over the course of the season to help this worthy cause, as well as having collection buckets at all their games. Their first event will be a sponsored 30-mile walk challenge for coaching assistant Elliot Haigh and his younger sister Ruby who plays for the team, and plans for a bake sale, raffle and even a sponsored football match are also in the pipeline.

Ben Haigh, Huddersfield Town Women under 14s manager, says,

“We are proud to be supporting Candlelighters as our charity of the season. Children’s cancer affects so many people, and to be able to do something to help is a great feeling.

“The players are so enthusiastic; full of fundraising ideas and even making posters. We can’t wait to get started!”

More details about each fundraiser will be shared on our social media channels, so give us a follow to keep up-to-date! We’d also love to hear from you if you have a fundraising idea you think the team might enjoy!

To make donating easy, we have set up a Just Giving page; all your support is welcome!

What do Candlelighters Do?

Each year, over 150 children in Yorkshire are diagnosed with cancer. When a child is diagnosed, lives are turned upside down instantly: not just for the child but the entire family. Getting well again can be a long and challenging journey, emotionally, physically, and financially. Supporting children and families throughout that journey is why Candlelighters was formed more than 40 years ago. Candlelighters understand the complexities and impacts of a childhood cancer diagnosis, and their mission is to bring light and hope to families facing childhood cancer in Yorkshire. They aim to do this by:

  • Providing emotional, practical and financial support to families. This includes the provision of expert support such as talking therapies, peer groups, wellbeing services, play support, holidays to create special family memories, day to day support on the wards, and a package of financial grants.
  • Delivering a range of high-quality family support services for as long as and wherever needed, from the point of diagnosis, during and after treatment, and for those families who are sadly bereaved. Candlelighters’ support can last a lifetime.
  • Supporting and strengthening the NHS centre of excellence in Yorkshire by funding crucial, front-line hospital roles.
  • Investing in vital research, education and training to improve the outcomes and lives of children and their families affected by childhood cancer both across Yorkshire and further afield.
