Sunderland 1 – 2 Huddersfield Town
7th April 2019
Brittany Sanderson, Lucy Sowerby

Huddersfield Town ladies came back from behind to secure all 3 points in their battle for second place. Town’s Brittany Sanderson cancelled Niamh McLaughlin’s opener in the first half before Lucy Sowerby scored the vital goal in the second half. This victory sees Huddersfield stay 5th but moved 4 points behind 2nd placed Sunderland with 3 games in hand.

The first half saw Huddersfield start the brightest but were unsuccessful to have any clear-cut chances. In the 20th minute Sunderland went ahead following a long-range cross to the feet of Niamh McLaughlin who took her time to slot the ball into the corner of the net. However, Huddersfield responded well getting the equaliser just 5 minutes later through Brittany Sanderson who took advantage of a mis-controlled clearance and lobbed the ball over Allison Cowling.

The second half couldn’t have gone any better for Huddersfield, as they scored just 3 minutes into it. Lucy Sowerby successfully chipped the onrushing keeper after getting behind the Sunderland defence. Huddersfield’s defence was seriously tested as Sunderland tried to get back into the game, this saw key saves from Anna Pederson.

The final whistle sounded to the delight of the Huddersfield players and travelling fans. This win has provided a great opportunity for Town to challenge for 2nd place and ended Sunderland’s winning run of 4 games at home.

Huddersfield travel to 4th placed Derby County next Sunday, 2pm ko
