Town Women started their 2021/22 pre-season with defeat in Glasgow this weekend in a closely fought 2-1 loss which saw Lucy Sowerby on the scoresheet. Champions League contenders, Celtic found themselves ahead during the first half before our equaliser was scored just a minute later. Town enjoyed more possession in the second half and held their own however conceded within the last 5 minutes to lose the game.

Manager, Jordan Wimpenny expressed how proud he was of the team’s performance:

“I credit all the players today for their discipline, organisation and full concentration for 90 minutes.”

The game began with Celtic, as expected, having more time on the ball and trying to break the strong Town defensive line. The trialist keeper kept answering all the questions the Celtic attack asked of her. Although the quicker-pace and clever passes allowed Celtic to take the lead around the half hour mark. This lead lasted just over a minute as Kate Mallin’s excellent cross found Britt Sanderson’s head before Lucy Sowerby tapped in the loose ball on the line. Cries of offside were drowned out by the shouts of joy from the town players.

Huddersfield were allowed more time on the ball during the second half. Town did have several chances to find a winner with Mallin coming close in a one-on-one situation against the Celtic keeper and Britt Sanderson having the ball cleared off the line three times! However, it wasn’t to be as the Scottish Super League side found the net in the 85th minute securing the victory.
It was also a notable day for Zoe Laughton, Macy Ellis and Lois who all made appearances during the game. Jordan believes the development of players throughout the squad is crucial:

“We want players to progress through the club and today we had the chance to give these players another opportunity in which they should all be very happy with as it was a big ask for them.”

Town’s pre-season will continue next Sunday where they face Fleetwood Town Wrens.
