An eventful first match sees Town Women take all the spoils
Huddersfield Town Women’s Development Squad started their 2020/21 campaign in the FA Women’s National League in impressive style, winning 5-4 away to Leeds United.
Town set the ball rolling and within the first 6 minutes, the game produced its first goal as Cassidy Clift found space in the box to shoot and score past the keeper at the near post, but she had to make an early exit after she picked up a knock.
Town then dominated the majority of the first half with many chances that were easily saved or just didn’t quite materialise, the best being Molly Ellis’ free header going shy of the post.
Then Town managed to extend their lead to 2 thanks to Faye Sherrington who went one on one with the Leeds keeper, her first shot was saved but the second found the bottom corner.
Leeds didn’t have many chances in the match but when they did it challenged keeper Lauren Joyce. The first being a great shot from outside the box in to the top corner on 40 minutes. Then just before half-time Leeds equalised through a stunning goal from 30 yards outside the box catching Joyce off guard.
In the second half it became a much more cagey start, with very few chances but on the hour mark Tara Duce received a beautiful through ball and gladly stuck it past the keeper to make it 3-2.
Town then started to dominate with more chances but then were pegged a goal back ten minutes later, after Leeds fired a shot that came in off the post to make it 3-3
It was then set to become a grandstand finish. First Town took the lead, again, this time through substitute Sian Gibril-Keating who beat the keeper one on one and stuck it into an empty net, before Macy Ellis got her goal after beating her defender, turning in the box, and putting it past the Leeds keeper to make it 5-3. Leeds then scored at the other end through a shot from a corner to make it 5-4. And it could have been another for town and Macy Ellis, but she was at a tight angle and could only put it into the side netting.
A fabulous 9 goal thriller to start the new season off for Town, who host Liverpool Feds at the Stafflex arena next Sunday
