Town Women Move Joint Top Of The Table
Huddersfield Town Women beat Nottingham Forest Women 2-1 at the Stafflex Arena to move level on points with the visitors at the top of the table.
Goals from Beth Stanfield and Kate Mallin gave the Terriers a massive three points as they recorded a fourth-successive victory.
Town started the game brightly and moments after Laura Elford hit the upright from a corner, Stanfield unleashed a rocket of a shot into the bottom corner to open the scoring.
The visitors equalised from a set piece when a free kick was headed home from close range two minutes from the half time whistle, but Town weren’t about to lie down.
The second half was both end-to-end and scrappy in midfield as both sides searched for the all-important winner – and it was Mallin who found it.
Brittany Sanderson battled for the ball well in the area before laying it off for Mallin who blasted the ball home into the roof of the net.
The vital three points mean that Town are level on points at the top of the table after six games ahead of their trip to Sheffield FC next weekend.
Assistant manager Marcus Wilkinson was thrilled with the win.
“To get the three points was really important. Forest definitely tested us but we played well and deserved the win.
Both goals were absolute screamers and to see us take both chances from a very tight game was massive. We missed a few last week [against Middlesbrough] so to convert them today was brilliant.
We’ll look to make it five wins in a row against Sheffield FC next weekend. We’re not looking at the league table after only six games – we’re taking it game by game and long may it continue.”
