On fire on and off the pitch as Town score nine in pre-season friendly.
Town were on the road for the second week running as the Terriers travelled to Fleetwood Town Wrens. Despite the heat, Town ran riot and scored five goals in the final 10 minutes to grab their first victory of pre-season.
It was not the first thing to happen in ‘five’ with Kate Mallin opening the scoring for Town in the fifth minute. A great start for Town that only got better as the game went on. As the first half-continued, Town scored another three goals, with a trialist, Britt Sanderson and Lucy Sowerby scoring to take the Terriers into the break with a four-goal lead. The trialist scored with great power, Sanderson’s shot chipped the ‘keeper and Sowerby’s goal on the stroke of half-time ended a successful half.
For the majority of the second half, the game was steady with both Town and Fleetwood seeing plenty of the ball, but in the 80th minute, the Wrens started to tire, and the Terriers took full advantage of that. The final period of the game went from strength to strength as Sowerby and the trialist grabbed another two goals each, with both players ending the game on a hat-trick. Substitute and centre-back Georgia Marshall got involved in the action, adding to the tally from a corner.
A clean sheet, nine goals and two hat-tricks surely pleased both manager Jordan Wimpenny and his assistant Marcus Wilkinson during a long 90 minutes in blistering heat on the coast.
At full-time assistant manager Marcus Wilkinson spoke on the performance:
“We won nine-nil, we kept a clean sheet, any pre-season game is all about getting minutes in the players legs.
We had three or four trialists in the squad and one of them got a hat-trick, which is always a positive for us, so yeah, a good day.”
Town now have a week off before hosting three games consecutively in August.
