Town Women return in style against GB Police Squad
Huddersfield Town Women defeated GB Police Football 4-0 at the Stafflex Arena on Tuesday night as they dominated large parts of the game. The contest welcomed a homecoming for many Town supporters back to West Yorkshire after a much awaited 177 days since many were last seen on home turf.
The game started with positive intent from the hosts in the sunshine as the Terriers pressed high up the pitch on the counter attack. Just after 5 minutes UK Police Football had their first chance of the game, Bethan Davies untroubled twice in quick succession after two shots on target were registered within minutes by the visitors.
The opposition did have Sarah Danby at their disposal, against her parent side, although they found it difficult to stamp any kind of authority on the game.
Town managed to open their account just after the 25th minute mark. Britt Sanderson found herself along the back line of the visitors. Cries of offside were echoed by the opposition but Sanderson continued to play on smashing the ball into the back of the net from range. The keeper was completely distracted in the process.
A one goal advantage for the hosts was the story at the break, something to build on in a very competitive first half to say the least. But it would be the second half that would open up further cracks for the opposition. A fantastic drive by Kate Mallin from the edge of the box 5 minutes after the break doubled the lead as she fired the ball in the bottom left of the goal following a corner, the ball bouncing off several bodies.
The third and fourth followed in turn, Serena Fletcher grabbing a brace in no time impressing gaffer Jordan Wimpenny and the returning fans. Her fourth the pick of the bunch as the ball was rifled into the back of the net from range, an exceptional strike in the circumstances with the third coming just beforehand, an easy tap in as she went round the opposing keeper. Jordan Wimpenny, was over the moon with the way his team continued the highs from last season.
“I thought it was a really solid performance from the team, I thought every player was excellent. I asked some jobs from players that they normally wouldn’t do and they took to the challenge really well. They were excellent in their individual performances so they all should be really pleased.”
Wimpenny is aware of the talents Serena Fletcher poses to the opposition.
“Serena I asked for many different jobs in the game and to be honest she took to each one superbly. She is a good player and she showcases her attributes, all credit to her. She should be really pleased with that performance and I’m sure she will take that into the next game.”
With the Pre-season on the horizon in a couple of weeks time, the match was perfect preparation ahead of the forthcoming fixtures which are yet to be confirmed.
