Five-Star Town Blow Magpies Away
Huddersfield Town Women continued their 100% record in pre-season with a 5-0 win over Newcastle United Women at the Stafflex Arena.
A brace a piece from Sarah Danby and Lucy Sowerby saw the Terriers emerge comfortable victors from a rather one-sided game.
Sowerby, last season’s top scorer, was thrilled to notch a brace.
“It was great to get another big win against tough opposition.
Getting on the scoresheet again was nice too so I want to keep this momentum building into the first game of the league season against Fylde.”
Manager Jordan Wimpenny took charge of the game on his birthday and the heavy win was the perfect present
“It was another top performance from the players. Their commitment and application keeps on improving and that can only be a good thing.”
Town started much the brighter side and took the lead with just a few minutes on the clock.
Kate Mallin best her marker well and, after her initial cross was blocked, the second delivery found Sarah Danby unmarked at the back post and the ex-Sunderland player nodded home.
And Mallin was at it again, taking her marker to the byline before sending in a teasing cross which was met strongly by Lucy Sowerby whose header caught the visiting ‘keeper in no man’s land to double the lead.
The away side had gone into the game in good form, having beaten local rivals Sunderland 1-0 a couple of weeks ago, but Town simply had too much quality.
After a spell of comfortable possession, the third goal came courtesy of Sowerby again who rifled the ball into the top right corner to give her side a three-goal lead at the break.
Having netted in the first half, Danby placed home a wonderful volley from another Mallin cross as Town’s no.9 trebled her pre-season tally before Laura Elford got in on the act.
Town’s centre forward notched seven goals in the previous two matches ahead of the match and, after missing a few earlier chances, turned the ball home into an empty net after unselfish play from substitute Serena Fletcher to complete the scoring.
Wimpenny was thrilled with his side’s performance
“We kept another clean sheet – that’s four in five games now – so that’s an area that we keep on improving week in, week out.
Were full of confidence and scoring lots of goals so if we keep on working hard in training we’ll be ready for the season to start against Fylde on the 20th”
