Sheffield & Hallamshire Women’s Challenge Cup Semi Finals 2017/18

The first team progressed to the Women’s Challenge Cup final to be played at the Keepmoat Stadium on May 15th and for the third successive year, they’ll face Barnsley Ladies in the final.

Town overcame a tough test at Oughtibridge against a team in fine form and on a pitch which wasn’t the best for flowing football.

Town had the majority of the play in the opening minutes of the game and a Kate Mallin cross found Lucy Sowerby just outside the 6 yard box but she fired her powerful shot straight into the arms of a grateful Oughtibridge keeper.

A few minutes later and Brittany Sanderson fired wide of the target.

Town’s opener came in the 21st minute when, Ella Harris saved a ball from going out and then played the ball into Sanderson who flicked it to Sowerby to scuff a shot past the stranded keeper, 1-0.

At the other end, Oughtibridge had their first clear chance of the game but they fired over.

Sarah Danby then had two decent efforts, the first crashing against the Oughtibridge crossbar and the second saved by the keeper.

Half time 0-1.

Town started the second half strongly and two minutes in Sowerby fired just wide of the target.

A minute later however and she made amends when she calmly placed the ball past the Oughtibridge keeper.

The referee wasn’t helping Town’s cause, with a number of high and late challenges going unpunished.

With 64 minutes gone, Danby was taken down in the centre circle, the referee waived play on and Oughtibridge launched the ball forward. As Laura Carter went up for it, she appeared to be fouled and Oughtibridge slotted the ball home. Needless to say Town weren’t happy, and 4 yellow cards were shown in that one instant, all for dissent.

Town continued to press and Sowerby had another effort deflected wide of the target.

Oughtibridge applied some pressure in the final few minutes of the game but Town held on for a deserved win
