Huddersfield Town Women Development Team begin their 2021/22 campaign on Sunday as they host Liverpool Feds in the Northern Division Reserves league.
After over a month of preparation, our Development Team are more than ready for the season ahead as they aim to put the covid-fuelled season from last year behind them.
Pre-season started in the West Midlands for our Development Team as Mo Mouelhi and the team travelled to West Bromwich Albion. A great first game to get minutes back into the players legs after not playing for the last few months. It was success for the Devs after a great cross from Sian Gibrill-Keating found a West Brom defender in the box who hit the ball into the back of her own net.
As the game continued, Town saw many more chances, with U18 players Laura and Alyssa both getting on the score sheet. In the second half, new summer signing Falone Sumaili scored two debut goals to show her capabilities in front of goal.
With Town continuing their pre-season run, the Devs travelled down the road to South Yorkshire and came up against Barnsley in a Tuesday evening game.
The game got off to a great start for the Terriers, and another fantastic performance from Sumaili as the new signing scored a hat-trick to make it five goals in her first two games. Although Town lead in this game, a late comeback from Barnsley saw the full-time whistle blow and the game end in a draw. This was another great chance for the players to continue their build for the start of the campaign.
Just a few days later, on Yorkshire Day, Town travelled to Harrogate Town where an unlucky goal in the early stages of the game saw the Terriers behind for the first time. As the game continued, Sumaili scored again to get Town back in the game, however, this was not enough with Harrogate finding their winner shortly after.
For their next friendly, the Devs were back on home soil and hosting Ossett United for the third meeting since the start of last season, and finally, in a change of fortune, our Development team came out victorious.
Their previous two ties saw 14 goals scored by either side, and this friendly was no different. The Terriers scored four in a six goal thriller, with Sumaili, Zoe Laughton, Tara Duce and Molly Ellis the goalscorers. A real show of resilience as to how much the side have progressed in the last year as they beat their opponents for the first time in three meetings.
Town travelled back to the Midlands for their final game of pre-season as they came up against Leicester City at their training ground. Again, another goal fuelled game saw the Devs come out on top after scoring seven.
Macy Ellis scored three, Sumaili grabbed two, Laughton scored again for her second game on the bounce and Gibrill-Keating added another to run riot as the final preparations were well underway for the start of the campaign.
A real success for Town in pre-season, having come out victorious in three of their five games. New signing Falone Sumaili definitely showing her capability in front of goal for the Terriers scoring in every single game, scoring nine of our 20 goals.
Town now look to prepare for their first game against Liverpool Feds at the Stafflex Arena on Sunday where fans are welcome to come down and support our Development Team as they push for opening day success.
