14th March 2020
Handsworth Juniors 1 – 2 Huddersfield Town U10’s
Having got to the Cup Final last year and finishing with only a runners up medal, Town U10’s entered the 2019/20 Cup Final knowing what they had to do.
With the game barely started – both teams created early chances, but the finish eluded both teams.
6 mins in and Izzy Cleverley got the best early chance but was stopped by the Handsworth’s goalie.
After that Town began to see more of the play and on 21 mins Alysia Singh got the ball through to Harriet Oldfield who made sure the shot went into the back of the net. 0-1
Handsworth responded immediately and if it wasn’t for a great save from Maddie Hamilton, the opposition would have clawed one back.
Although both teams tried to look for another goal, the goalies, at each end, did their part and stopped the score line progressing.
Second half and Handsworth were again immediately on the attack, but Hamilton was as quick to react with another save early on.
The opposition kept up the attack but Town stood their ground with some great defensive plays from Ellie Adams and Holly Wilkinson.
37 mins – Handsworth were through on goal but Hamilton was there to pull off another great save, however 2 mins later and another quick charge from Handsworth saw the ball roll into the box and an easy tap in off a Handsworth player saw the ball roll over the line for the equalizer. 1-1
Town didn’t let the set-back get to them and instead they got straight back into the game taking the game to Handsworth.
42 mins – and close to looking like the game may go into extra time, Cleverley got the ball out on the left, passing the players ahead of her, and getting a run on goal followed by a strike that went beyond the goalies reach into the top left corner. 1-2
Town settled in and played out the remainder of the game stopping Handsworth at every opportunity and taking the deserved win.
Final score: 1-2
Overall – The girls performed well in all areas of the pitch giving Handsworth a tough time in controlling the game. Hamilton was strong in goal scuppering the few chances Handsworth got through on goal. Adams and Wilkinson were solid in defence stopping Handsworth’s charges on goal. Clarke, Oldfield, Cleverley and Singh worked through mid-field and attack creating chances and getting the two goals. Substitutes Ward, Clayton and Hackney came on and maintained the strong team tactics to ensure that Town stayed in control for the remainder of the game.
